Bob was born in the city of Toronto on June 29, 1937. He was educated at St Michael's College School, St. Michael's College, at the University of Toronto and graduated from the Faculty of Law at the University of Toronto in 1964. Bob was admitted to the bar in Ontario in 1966 and was made Queen's Counsel in 1980.

Bob began practicing law with O'Driscoll, Kelly & McRae in Toronto in 1966 and remained there until 1973. He then moved to Aird & Berlis in Toronto where he practiced from 1973 to 1976. In 1976 Bob moved to Sarnia and joined the firm McEachran & Associates, now known as George Murray Shipley Bell, LLP.

Bob is very involved in community activities, which include serving on the boards of the Sarnia Foundation, St. Joseph's Health Centre, (past chair), Centre by the Bay (past chair), and the St. Joseph's Health Care Society of London. Bob has been the area Director of the Legal Aid Ontario in Lambton County since 1987.

On a personal level, Bob and his wife Carol, have four children, Melanie, Andrew, Matthew and Bryan. Bob is pleased to have his daughter, Melanie, return to Sarnia to practice law at George Murray Shipley Bell, LLP.

Bob Murray is the recipient of the Governor General's Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada received in 1992. He also received the Law Society of Upper Canada's Bicentennial Award for Service to the Community awarded in 1997. In 1999, Bob was awarded the Canadian Bar Association's Award for Distinguished Service to the Profession and the Public.
